What is Estimating?

EstimatingTo appraise or calculate the cost for a project

Precast estimating involves calculating the costs and materials required for creating precast concrete components used in construction projects. It is a vital role that combines technical skills, problem solving abilities, and attention to detail. With a career in precast estimating, you play a key role in sharpening the world of construction while enjoying a rewarding and stable profession in a growing industry.

Program Structure & Length

Over a period of 4 terms you will follow a path for success which includes:

BIM Expertise

Learn the ins and outs of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and how the process works in structural, architectural and Mechanical & Electrical Services contexts.

Construction Process

Gain hands-on experience and understanding of the intricacies of construction processes.

Business Communication Skills

Develop essential skills, including personality types and leadership skills, to excel in the professional world.

Building Code Knowledge

Acquire basic code knowledge to navigate the regulatory landscape confidently.

Pre-requisites

  • OSSD or equivalent
  • Grade 12 English (College or University)
  • ONE of the following Mathematics:
    • Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology
    • Grade 12 Advanced Functions
    • Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
    • Grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics
  • Computer literate
  • Detail orientated

Course Curriculum

Blueprint Reading for Construction Trades 1 - Online Learning

Course Description:

Our Building Code Regulation course recognizes that the Ontario Building Code is a complex and ever-evolving piece of legislation and that you must understand how the regulation developed before you can properly administer the code. Study the fundamentals of this legislation as well as some of the other legislation that a building official is required to consider during the enforcement process. This building code course also helps you develop the skills you need to deal with people who fail to comply with the law during construction.

Course Description:

Our Building Information Modelling Fundamentals course is a theory-based course that teaches a variety of concepts key to the implementation and management of building information modelling (BIM). BIM involves creating and managing files that represent the physical and functional features of locations in order to assist in decision making about those locations. Learn about Canadian and international standards, policies and procedures, organizational commitment, legal implications, interoperability of BIM platforms, methods of delivery and BIM execution.

Course Description:

Students develop practical writing skills using technology for successful communication in business. They learn how to compose business correspondence including e-mails, memoranda, letters, and reports with a focus on routine, persuasive, and negative messages. The course includes a review of grammar and mechanics.

Our Concrete Construction course teaches you about many other components of this major form of construction in addition to the concrete itself. Learn about formwork and its hardware, reinforcing steel and mesh, inspection and testing, the basic composition of the material, procurement, placement, scheduling, quality control and the finished product. Our Construction Law course teaches you about the rights and obligations of parties under contract according to legislation (specifically in relation to construction projects). Examine contract documents, the interpretation of clauses, court cases, bylaws, building codes, legal terms, the Construction Lien Act, case studies involving disputes, and strategies for avoiding legal problems.
